Should this CEO be fired? Absolutely.

HBO co-pres­i­­dent Eric Kessler has said he thinks the move away from tra­di­tional tele­vi­sion to an in­­ter­net-based model is just a fad that will pass – a “tem­po­rary phe­nom­e­non” tied to the down economy.

I think Eric Kessler, too, is just a fad that will pass. :-) He’s delu­sional, show­ing the ex­act at­ti­tude that made the mu­sic in­dus­try the loser of the last decade. Yet, I can un­der­stand how a mu­sic in­dus­try CEO could get it wrong 10 years ago. How you still can get it wrong in 2012 is a mys­tery to me.

It’s a mys­tery that I also en­counter with small busi­ness clients who have a hard time un­der­stand­ing that sta­tic web sites and zero so­cial me­dia is cut­ting them off from where the world is going.

As a busi­ness owner or CEO you need to look ahead a lit­tle, and make sure your’re biz is­n’t turn­ing into a di­nosaur. Fail­ing to do so is not only miss­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties, it’s risk­ing the ex­tinc­tion of your busi­ness, even the ex­tinc­tion of whole industries.

If HBO does­n’t change their at­tid­tude, they’ll be ex­tinct, too. And a new­comer will hap­pily rake in the prof­its, like Ap­ple is now rak­ing in the prof­its that the mu­sic in­dus­try, with just a lit­tle fore­sight, could have kept to itself.
